SBGi Portland Coach Cane Prevost’s Revamps His Blog

Straight Blast Gym’s Cane Prevost has revamped his blog at www.caneprevost.com. Cane is a BJJ black belt and a SBGi Coach at the SBGi Headquarters in Portland, OR. His blog is a place where Coach Cane not only provides concise and practical advice on the various positions in BJJ, through videos, photos and step-by-step instruction, but also a place where he shares thoughts and theories about his approach to learning and training in BJJ. As such, it is not only excellent for recapping BJJ fundamentals, but a great resource for better understanding the gentle art of BJJ and the SBGi philosophy surrounding it.

04Coaching Articles & Philosphical Rants

As a white belt, I can only speak as a relative beginner, but Cane’s blog provides a hugely useful guide for what to focus on as you start your journey in BJJ. Articles such as Simple Things You Can Do To Improve Your Jiu Jitsu Game and The Fallacy of Technique really help to solidify the best approach to training when the infinite possibilities of jiu jitsu become too much to hold on to. The article How To Be A Great Mediocre BJJ Player holds great advice for those who might find themselves frustrated or confused. It provides a great reminder to take the pressure off yourself, relax and enjoy the process – to slow down, breathe, and focus on the fundamental postures that are inevitably at the core of most sticking points.

04Learn Jiu Jitsu

With the internet awash with advice on BJJ and youtube videos showing every technique imaginable, executed both correctly and incorrectly, Coach Cane’s Learn Jiu Jitsu section provides a valuable source on the fundamental postures and pressures in each position. Rather than attempting to add every technique in existence to a BJJ arsenal via the internet, Cane’s collection of simple step-by-step instructions to building correct posture will provide a much simpler and direct route to successful BJJ.

I strongly encourage any BJJ students just starting out to read Cane’s blog posts. Not only is Cane an amazing coach, but he writes with the same clarity that his approach to coaching provides.
