Tom takes crossides

Congratulations to all the participants at this most recent SBG Cup. Although it sounds cliche, what really matters is that you all stepped on the mat and tried. You competed publicly, and it is the willingness to do that which separates Performance Athletes like yourselves from the dime a dozen "Martial Artists" or even worse "streetfighters". By challenging yourselves at such an event you have set the stage for your own increased performance and growth that can last the rest of your life.

The quarterly event was scored on the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu point system. Matches where five minutes each, and separated by weight. The exception to this was the Open division which has no weight classes and no time limits, going until submission.

Here are the results for each weight class:

Women's division: This Year we had a great women's division and the level of competition was among the best in all the weight classes. Barbora Piknova from the Beaverton branch swept through the division. After a fantastic match with Flynn from the Portland branch which she won by two points, she stepped out and faced Kudra Khan from Portland in the finals, winning by points. Way to go Barbora! I am sure this division will become one of the most competitive in the event, and I know many of the women are already preparing for rematches to be held at the Spring Cup on April 29th.

Barbora and Flynn battle it out in the womens division

The "Animal" goes to work

135 lbs and under: Greg (the Animal) Piper from the Beaverton branch squared off against Riccardo Viallareal from Salem, winning by submission.

135 - 155lbs: This was a large division with athletes from all four branches of the Gym. In the end the division was won by Nathaniel Castro from the Salem branch. He demonstrated great technical proficiency winning all matches by submission.

155 - 175lbs: The biggest division of the competition. This event was won by Albany Gyms John Mcveigh. Although we hadn't seen John in awhile he showed no rust in his game as he worked his way through match after match. The final was between John and his brother Joe Mcveigh. Great job John.

175 - 215lbs: This division came down to two finalists both of whom are members of the new Straight Blast Gym 2000 Competition Team. Kress and Ben, both from the Portland Branch, fought it out in the finals after the open division with Ben winning in the end. Both Kress Matajacik and Ben Radach also entered the Open division where they did fantastic considering the amount of time they have had at the Gym.

215 & Over: Lloyd Stockton from the Portland Branch squared off against Brian Stromberg from the Beaverton Branch, with Brian winning the division. Brian went on to compete in the open class where he made it into the finals.

Open Class: These matches have no time limits, and no points. Going until submission. This class produced the most surprises. The first match was with Nathaniel (who won his weight division) vs Tom Oberhue of the Beaverton Branch. Tom won in the end but Nathaniel put up a great effort. The second match featured Jeff Wassom vs Ben Radach. This was a great match and a classic battle of wrestling vs pure BJJ skill. Ben won by armlock. Then it was Nathen (the pebble) Quarry vs Brian Stromburg. In what has to be considered an upset victory Brian tapped out Nathen with a triangle. Good job Brian! Greg (the animal) Piper put up a valiant effort against a much heavier Steve Cooper (Salem Branch). Both Greg and Steve are members of comp team 2000 and will be competing this upcoming year. Steve won by submission but Greg gave him a great fight. Kress faced Kevin Getch from Beaverton winning by submission, and then went on to face Brian Stromberg. After a great battle Brian won by submission. Tom Oberhue faced Ben Radach in what turned out to be a 25 minute fight where Tom finally won with a rolling knee bar from the bottom. Look for Ben to compete April 1st in the Roseland where he will bring home a win for the whole Gym!

Tom and Brian in the open finals

The finals came down to two Beaverton Branch athletes. Brian Stromberg (240lbs) vs Tom Oberhue (180lbs) with Tom winning and capturing the open class title.

With the points gained from the Open Class and three weight divisions Beaverton won the Straight Blast Cup, and took it from the Salem branch to the Beaverton Branch where it resides until the next Competition

NEXT Spring Straight Blast Cup: April 29th (Sat) 10am Beaverton Branch SBG

Good Job Beaverton!
