Gorilla Press #5 - Fall 2001
Perfection in life does not exist; and
if it did it would not be lovable, but admirable, possibly even
a bore. For let us note well, what is precisely lovable about
any human being is her imperfections."
- Joseph Campbell
Hello all,
I have recently received a couple e-mails that stated that
they felt the recent interview posted at our website was a little
on the negative side. I sat down and read the interview and see
the point to some degree. I am asked certain questions on the
state of JKD, or to be specific, the biggest problems or obstacles
facing JKD. . .well it's hard not to point out a negative when
asked that question. The nature of the question is such.
However, I also believe that honesty is always the best
policy. This makes some people mad, it is bound to. This offends
some people, that's in their best interest. Sometimes people need
to be offended. If they are, then the comment hit a nerve, and
a little to close to home. Great, wake them all up! I have found
that when half truths are told, or people walk on egg shells in
order to not offend others. . .confusion always springs forth.
Anyway, the point of this e-mail is that the reality of
JKD, and the reality of the Gym, and some within JKD are two very
different things. Our Organization is growing slowly but solidly.
I know that we have some of the best athletes, fighters, teachers,
and people within the Martial arts community as a whole, and certainly
within JKD listed on our family tree. The victories in competition
are almost becoming redundant. As I scanned the back issues of
Gorilla Press I realized just how amazing the performance of our
athletes within the realm of competition has been. The message
of 'Aliveness' is spreading, and many other Instructors are walking
on within JKD and pushing the whole paradigm forward. People like
my friend Burton Richardson. Some of Paul Vunaks PFS people, and
many more who don't get publicity but are spreading the word.
All in all the health of the Gym, it's people, the movement
towards 'Aliveness', etc, has never been brighter. A lot to be
happy about. All in all I would have to say I am feeling very
'positive'. - Matt Thornton
To all SBG members. I am very sad to report that one of my
very good friends, and one of the first SBG students, Maria Mignano,
was killed last night 9/4/01.
Maria was a State Trooper and was killed in the line of duty
by an oncoming truck after having stopped to help a stranded motorist.
I will miss her greatly, and it's a big loss for everyone who
had the privilege of knowing her.
I will post an address where you can send condolences if you so
choose. - Matt Thornton
Hardcore Gym wins 3 in a row!
Three hard fights last night and three wins.
Rory won his match with an armbar. Rory's ground game
and clinch looked really good. His opp was a boxer so
we knew if he kept his hands up and chin down he would be allright.
His second opp hurt his knee and had no standup or wrestling
so after seeing Rorys fight he pulled out. Forrest fought
a pro boxer and after trading punchs (and getting a mean looking
black eye) he drove in to clinch with the guy. He drove
the guy into the ropes and they almost went over the ropes.
His opp herniated a disk in his back and was taked out on a
strecher. The second opp was about 6'7 and 270, a former
linbacker at a D1 school. They moved around the ring and
traded some shoots. Eventually Forrest ends with the guy
in his guard and does a great climbing armbar. Fight over.
All three wins for us were under 5 minutes each. - Adam
It is only a month til the Straight Blast Gym fall camp.
This is just a friendly reminder that time is short to make reservations.
The camp will be in Portland Oregon on September 22-23. Along with
host instructor Matt Thornton we have Chris Haueter (Machado BB),
Rodney King (Mauy Thai from South Africa), and special guest Randy
Couture for one session. This should be the best camp yet. The official
sponsor motel for this event is again the Ramada Inn at the Portland
Airport. You may contact them at (503)255-6511. Mention the SBG
martial arts camp and the rate will be $50 per room. This is about
half price and there is a free shuttle and a dinning area in the
motel.
Brian Stromberg kicks ass in Africa!
Hi there all,
Just a quick note to let you all know that Brian won his
fight in Africa. To summarize, Brian clinched quickly, took his
opponent to the ground, mounted him, and cracked his opponents
head open with a few good elbows and strikes. The rest was history,
Brian kicked ass in less than a minute and a half and won on a
TKO. I was proud to be in his corner....
Cheers All, - Rodney

Matt completes Denmark Seminar.
Odense was the home of Hans Christian Andersen
March 29th through April 5th 2001 Matt Thornton
conducted Functional JKD training in the beautiful country of
Denmark. The seminars were located in Odense outside Copenhagen.
You can read about Michael's Gym here: www.jeetkunedogym.com
Much thanks to Michael and Tina for there hospitality on
the visit. There was a large group assembled for Matt's two
day seminar, and Matt also conducted a number of privates,
as well as working privatly with Michael and his brother.
The seeds of 'Aliveness' are certainly planted in Denmark
and it's are hope and belief that the Art and sport will grow
with the help of people like Michael.

Matt Thornton completes Africa seminar tour.
Matt recently returned from a three week trip
to Africa where he taught a series of seminars and workshops
for SBG Instructor Rodney King and his ST Gym. Here is a note
from Matt on the trip:
As usual the Africa trip was a blast. Although
I did not wrestle any lions on this trip I did have a run
in with several "bakki's" , a capetown ghost, and discovered
the long lost 'false idol of combat athletics' that was presented
to me by a secret African tribe.
On my second night in Africa I was present in
the corner for Rodney's team as they competed in the
first ever UFC South Africa. Rodney's athletes did fantastic
and the competition was entertaining. However, the promoters
made the mistake of admitting a Kung Fu practitioner, as well
as several traditional martial artists. As you may have guessed,
these people received major beatings. I don't like seeing
this in NHB. It makes the sport appear violent and barbaric.
When two combat athletes fight each other it looks like
a sport. When you put a combat athlete against a traditional
karate, or wing chun, or TKD person it looks like a beating.
These people do not belong in the ring as they are in capable
of defending themselves, and that's always bad for the sport.
I hope UFC SA survives. But for it to continue they will have
to keep the event as a showcase for athletes, not a "watch
the kung fu guy take a terrible beating" spectacle.
Rodney's Gym is continuing to prosper and some
of his best athletes such as Bobby Karagianidis, Wiukus, Kirk,
and Alex are spreading the Art & philosophy to other parts
of the Country.
This trip I also had the privilege of visiting
Cape Town. Cape Town is a beautiful city, and no offense to
the Joberg residents, but it gave me a whole new view of what
Africa can be like. Ocean beaches, clean air, etc.
Special thanks to Steven Bazzea for helping
organize the seminar.
Steven has a great Gym that is beginning to
grow and a wonderful family. All the makings of a great life.
Also thanks to Erik the viking for providing Rodney with plenty
of entertainment.
Here is some pics from UFC SA and the
Africa trip:

Bobby K from Rodney's Gym mounts Ludwig Strydom, a tough
BJJ fighter from Cape Town. Ludwig attended the Capetown seminar
and is a talented athlete. He won this tough battle against Bobby
in the third round. This was Bobby's first ever competition.

Greg Walker, another tough athlete en-route to a victory
John Weston en-route to a victory
John is an intelligent and calm fighter. He will go far
in NHB or coaching if he so chooses

to a quick victory
A note for my Africa students:
Howzit (for the capetowners Whozit) Thanks much to everyone
I had a 'lakker' time. Special thanks to 'Scuba Steve' who
is now a drinking legend in the USA. And 'quickshot' for
his help while I was there. As usual there was no 'wankers'
in Rodney's gym, although there may be a few 'nutters'.
Although I wouldnt want to comment to much on that because
'it's just not cricket!' Provided I don't suffer a whobble
I'll be back. See you just now.

Congrats to Luis and team ODMA on another victory!
Competition at the FFC Submission Grappling
open was fierce with over 125 competitors and 28 schools
represented. Team ODMA dominated the kids divisions, took
two first places in the teens divisions, and a third place
in the adult intermediate and beginner's divisions. This
was ODMA's first tournament where several gym members Outside
of the ICC and Comp. teams competed and it was a shining
testament to the SBG's philosophy that so many athletes
of all ages and experience levels were so skillfully represented.
From those barely a decade old to those with several ones
quickly adding up, having won or lost, team Members and
weekend warriors, all those who competed are as eager as
ever to go at it again in September.

Congrats to Brian Stromberg, Rick Davison,
Travis Davison, and Jai Walsh for graduating the ICC
2000. This was the first time since the courses first
Year that more then two athletes graduated in one Year.
Good job and good fortune as they add to the cadre of
SBG Instructors and begin the job of coaching.
Note: Since the writing of this
update Brian Stromberg won another NHB match in under two
minutes via submission, and SBG Instructors Jai Walsh and
Greg Piper also fought and went the distance against very
skilled opponents. The next weekend Rory Singer, and Forest
of the Georgia hardcore Gym both fought NHB and both won.
Congratulations to everyone!
"Coming soon. . . . .pics from the Georgia
