Gorilla Press #9 - Winter 2003

Congrats to Darren Curries Combat Base team who compeated in Karl Tanswell's Sub League and did very well. Young Jonny won three matches, 2 chokes and 1 arm bar. Spenna had four matches and only lost one match to a BJJ brown belt, Braulio who had been national champion 6 times in Brazil, and Cheryl won one and lost one (to a purple belt) so all in all not an excellent day! Congrats Team Combat Base!

"Congrats to SBGI Ireland Director John Kavanagh. John wins another MMA victory in the UK! To qoute John:

"My opponent was about two inches shorter but about 6lbs heavier, with a much more solid build than me. I expected him to shoot pretty early, I was surprised when he started by landing a very heavy leg kick. After that I hit him with a good right cross, he took it and shot in. I caught him in a guillotine and landed a heavy knee to his thigh. While trying to set up the guillotine he took me down and landed in my guard. I immediately went to open guard. He tried a few shots from his knees between my guard but my defence was too good so he stood up to try and pass/strike. So I grabbed his ankles and swept him back. I scrambled for top and ended in his closed guard. I opened his guard and stood up and began to set up an ankle lock (pic attached). From there I sat back and applied a straight ankle lock. There was an audible 'pop' but he didn't tap. I gave up on it and went back on top. He put me in his half guard which I passed to side control, to knee ride, to mount. From there I landed one good shot and he stuck up his arm - armlock! He tried to pick me up and slam me but I wasn't letting go. One loud 'crack' later and he tapped. 2 min 18secs.

One of my students Adrian Degorski won a great match. He was four years on the Polish National Boxing team so you can imagine how good he is. It took him about 1min to stop his opponent with just a straight blast of hard lefts and rights."

Second Place U.S. National Kid's Team Title 2003

In a kid's division with over 100 competitors from throughout the country, the defending U.S. National 2002 Champs, ODMA took second in total team points with only ten of its young athletes competing this year.

Since we were one of the smaller teams present, several of our kids even competed up a weight class to assist in our total team points! I could not have been prouder with their fantastic attitude and performance throughout the entire six hours of their matches. They are truly a testament to working as hard as the play! Great sportsmanship and effort team!
Pictures and video footage will be up in a week at www.onedragon.com
