SBGi Instructor Candidate Course (ICC)

The ICC course began in 1996. The purpose of the ICC was to help facilitate the performance and knowledge of a select group of athletes who could then help the Gym grow, and meet the demands for SBG type training.

Magazine CoverThe first class (1997) produced five Instructors who have gone on to teach, and many of whom you have trained under, Robert Follis, Tom Oberhue, Dan Robinson, and Michael Chapman. Both Tom and Michael have since gone on to achieve their black belts in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

In 1998 the second class was formed and produced Portland Instructor Lloyd Stockton. The third class 1998 produced Gym Instructor Greg Piper. ICC1999 saw the graduation of SBG Instructors Jai Walsh, Travis Davison, and Rick Davison. All of whom currently teach at the Portland Gym. ICC2000 saw the graduation of Brian Stromburg, who has gone on to pursue a career in NHB fighting. He has also shown himself to be a good Coach and patient Instructor. ICC2001 saw the graduation of the newest SBG Instructors, Kress Matijacik.

The ICC 2002 was exceptional in that all the athletes that began the program continued on with the training throughout the next two Years. This is due in large part to the dedication, and commitment of the athletes involved, and also the more progressive, and refined training methods that where instituted for the 2002 class. The 2003 class produced Gym Instructors Ken Allen, and Carlos Paladini. Both of whom can be currently found teaching at the Portland SBG.
2003 has been one of best Years yet, with Gym Coaches Michael Chapman, Tom Oberhue, and Dan Robinson assisting in the Coaching.

TeachingTypically each Year only a handful of people (usually 10-12) begin the 480 hour course, designed to help people who are interested in teaching someday, and helping to coach other athletes. This program is designed to accelerate an athlete's growth, and learning curve. Taking people to a level of skill and performance that might otherwise take many years to achieve.

ICC students develop their stand up, clinch, and ground skills. As well as learning the principles, concepts, and philosophies behind the Straight Blast Gym. Students who enter the ICC not only receive the Yearlong course but also get a lifetime membership with the Gym. However, this course is designed for people who eventually want to coach. As such, although the ICC is a way for students who plan on training at the Gym to save money in the long term, it is meant only for those who are interested in teaching at some point. In addition students who join the ICC are permitted to work in with all future ICC courses as well. Many Instructors frequently work out within the ICC and have done so in 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003 & 2004.

ICC 2005 will begin April 2005, and enrollment is ongoing throughout the Year.
