SBG Manchester’s Stapleton Wins via KO

Last Saturday night saw SBG Mainline’s Martin Stapleton pick up an impressive victory at BAMMA 19 in Blackpool, England. Stapleton knocked out his opponent, Jeremy Petley, with an emphatic head kick early in the third round, to make it two wins from two fights under the BAMMA organization.

Of his opponent, Martin Stapleton said:

“I am really happy. I knew it was going to be tough and it was. Jeremy Petley is a world class fighter but I knew going in that I was going to win and that I could win.”

The win certainly provided Stapleton with more of a test that he had in his BAMMA debut. The contest against Petley was originally scheduled for that night back in December, before Petley was forced to pull out due to injury. Once an opponent was eventually found in fellow BAMMA debutant Sebastian Fournier, Stapleton was always comfortable of securing a first round finish.

“I wouldn’t want to say it was too easy because that is disrespectful to Sebastian, but it was a step up in level for him and a step down in level for me.”

04Martin Stapleton On The Coming Year With BAMMA

The victory over Petley extends Stapleton’s record to 16-4, and he is confident of his prospects when discussing his future with the promotion:

“I am always confident and I have never really lacked confidence in anything. I can take on any fighter in the world and next I am going for the world title. We don’t have anything set yet and don’t have a date or venue or anything, but that is what I am aiming for next.”

Martin Stapleton may be ideally positioned to make a big name for himself in a sport and promotion on the rise in Europe, and in speaking to the Mirror before Saturday’s fight, revealed big plans to establish himself at the top of BAMMA’s lightweight division:

“Regardless of who my opponent is I want to win both those titles… I would like that Lonsdale belt because it is a traditional belt and a good accolade for a British fighter to take.

“It is a good division. Obviously they have good experience like myself, Colin Fletcher and Petley and then they have brought in the fresh young guys, the up-and-coming guys like Jack McGann, Marc Diakiese.

“These are names that people are starting to hear about on the national scene. They are on the right promotion and are going to be stars of the future.

“I think it is going to be the most exciting division there is. I think it is worldwide anyway.”
