"Hey Matt, my name is Jim. I purchased all 3 of your JKD series and I have to say that I am extremely shocked. I took Jiu Jitsu for years and in a nut shell "I sucked". For years I saw BJJ as "the art of 10,000 moves". I was so confused. Every move I learned had a counter. Every counter I learned had a counter to that. Variation after variation. I had so much valuable instruction under my belt but I couldn't stop my head from spinning. It's amazing that the basic principles escaped me. Through years of group classes and private lessons NOT ONCE was I taught the 5 simple principles on how to hold an opponent down in cross side top (just to use one example). Let me clarify, I was taught the 5 principles (along with a ton of other information) but it was never stressed that those 5 concepts were at the core of the possition. I realize now that my downfall was my inability to seperate the crucial basics from the advanced fluff. I say that because it is obvious that there are many people who can seperate the two (I may have sucked but my instructors also produced many champions). So I am so grateful that your style of teaching is so articulate in explaining the nuts and bolts of BJJ. I love the fact that as you teach more and more moves you always make it a point to say "remember, no matter how many variations I teach you it is only possible for your body to do A, B or C." You level the playing field for the students who can't figure it out on their own (the students who are blinded by the 10,000 techniques). I wish I saw your videos years ago because I actually quit jiu jitsu out of frustration that I wasn't intelligent enough to get it. For years I thought the answer was learn more, more, more. It's strange that the answer is to actually boil it down to learn less! Thanks so much for clarifying BJJ for me because it has been such a mystery to me for so long."

Review: Matt Thornton Florida Seminar 2003 Review
Matt Thorntons Florida Seminar 2003 is one of my favourite BJJ
videos of all time. The sheer content of necessary information
and the mixing with great music and rolling footage as well as
philosophical discussions make this a video one I like to watch
again and again from time to time. The set consists of 2 dvds
which together are over 5 hours long. It covers only BJJ and
most of the techniques are applicable in both gi and no-gi environments.
There is also a little section on Vale Tudo spider guard.
This is the best set to date to get an insight into the SBGi
training methodology (slow rolling, I-method, non-abt) and the
way fundamentals about techniques and positioning are stressed
(fundamental fives). It is also one of the best sets for basics
that has ever been done.
Some people prefer to watch instructionals as opposed to seminar
sets from a coaches viewpoint you will learn a lot here on teaching
just from watching Matt teach, structure the seminar, answer
questions and introducing new material
I will give an overview on what is specifically covered.
DVD 1:
The first dvd starts with a great discussion of fundamentals
of smart training or what Matt calls Fundamental 5 of Non-attribute
based training. These rules should be mandatory for anyone who
wants to progress fast and also wants to train as long as possible
without wrecking their body. I also use those as a type of rules
or guidelines in my own gym cause they help to maintain a good
environment and get people thinking about their well-being as
well as progress.
The dvd continues with guard material:
- Posture from the closed guard is covered in a version I havent
seen anyone else than Matt teach. Both the high posture and low
safety position are shown in detail. Defending common attacks
is also discussed and it is shown how to get combat base position
to start passing once the legs are opened. I-method of learning
is briefly discussed before training the material in an alive
fashion.
- Closed guard is discussed next. Matt shows a simple way how
to use your hands and legs to disrupt your opponents balance
and leads it to a simple sweep ending in mount. He also shows
how to maintain mount after the sweep you can get quite a few
ideas for maintaining mount from here. Next he shows how to setup
the kimura and a small nice detail how to prevent your opponent
from extending the arm. Posture breaking with cross grab to whizzer
grip is shown, and triangle, gi choke, omoplata and armbar are
shown from the whizzer grip.
- Omoplata from spider guard is shown and Matt spends a while
showing how to finish omoplata with either flattening him out,
sweeping or a crucifix type hold. Next Matt shows how to use
pitstop (high guard) to get armbars and also shows how to sweep
your opponent when he stands. He also shows how to counter if
someone stacks you up from pitstop or armbar positions. A nice
detail i use a lot to prevent him stacking at all is shown and
next rolling underneath and other options against stacking are
covered. This section ends with some rolling and you can see
a child prodigy named Adrian rolling with a big dude this footage
is absolutely awesome.
- Next Matt shows how to break your opponent down if he stands
up in good posture to open your guard. I have seen this move
shown only by Matt this far (also on another dvd set) and this
has become one of the most important moves in my own closed guard
game. It is followed by a discussion on aliveness and good training
methods. Matt also poses a philosophical question for the people
attending the seminar to think about during the lunch. The question
will be later discussed in the end of the dvd.
- The dvd continues with some rolling footage where you can
again see Matt and others slow-roll. Then opening the legs and
passing the guard are covered. Matt shows a 2-on-1 leg opening
and a grip to be able to pass the guard to both sides of opponents
body. I am not aware that this type of passing is shown on any
other dvd. He also shows a nice sweep he calls pivot sweep to
counter a certain type of passes.
- Next vale tudo strategy for BJJ is covered. Matt shows how
to use closed guard as an offensive position and how to use strikes
with hands and heels to set up submissions like triangles and
armbars. He also shows vale tudo spider guard which is a very
good strategy against someone who wants to ground and pound you
from your guard. This is mandatory material for anyone interested
in vale tudo. He shows both how to defend strikes and be safe
and how to attack with triangles and kimuras. He also discusses
getting pinned against the fence in the guard and shows a simple
drill for preventing this.
- The dvd ends with some rolling footage and a Q&A session.
The philosophical question posed before is also discussed and
Matt talks about different issues like good and bad days, Rickson,
Zone in the athletics and why people really do what they do.
DVD 2:
The second dvd starts with reviewing a some of the guard stuff
covered on the first dvd and some Q&A. Matt also discusses
problem solving in BJJ. He shows how to do an under pass without
giving your opponent any room to recover guard and then shows
how to do kneecrossing passes and go through different types
of resistance. He also shows how to stop a kimura from the open
guard while passing and how to catch a kimura as a counter to
your opponents one.
- Next Matt discusses the different delivery systems of BJJ
and the four possible environments where BJJ can be used. Then
he moves into the main topic of this dvd which is crushing top
game. He discusses and shows how to drill the fundamental 5 of
holding top and exerting pressure to be able to submit your opponent.
This section is very valuable for anyone wanting to improve their
top game an often neglected area in todays BJJ where half-guard
sweeps seem to be the dominant interest. Matt shows how to prevent
escaping to guard or rolling to knees, how to lock in the upper
body and how to kill the arms to get basic submissions like keylocks,
armbars, kimuras and paper cutter chokes.
- A few drills do develop a floating and moving top game are
shown. These helped me a lot while coaching lighter and female
athletes how to play top game. The session ends with some rolling
and a belt promotion. The dvd then continues with some more rolling
footage and floating top game is shown in more detail. Matt also
shows how to use different control positions when your opponent
is on their hands and knees. The training continues with a nice
drill where you use both floating and crushing top games to control
your opponent from top.
- Q&A session is on next and some sweeps from open guard
against combat base are covered as well as some takedowns against
people who run away from your guard. The dvd ends with a lot
of rolling footage where you can see Matt and Luis rolling with
a lot of guys.
Altogether this is one of the best BJJ sets for both practitioners
and coaches. The former will learn a lot of fundamental techniques,
understand the game of BJJ a lot better and learn a lot about
training methods. Coaches will get a lot of insight into maintaining
a healthy fun environment in their classes, into coaching methods
and teaching as well as a lot of material to teach people to
increase their performance.
SBGi BJJ 2005!
aka: The Berkeley Seminar
This series features the newest innovations to the
SBGi curriculum as taught by Matt Thornton, and was shot at a
seminar in February 2005.
The
set was edited by Rex Biteng, and he did a fantastic job in making
sure it is highly entertaining, while at the same time keeping
the instruction sections front and center, and the class time/demonstrations,
to a minimum.
The entire series focuses on how to train BJJ in the most technical
way possible, and how to make it fit and work for all types of
bodies. It is broken down neatly by detailed chapters for the
viewer.
Disc #1: The Smashing Top Game, Run Time
= 83 minutes!
Content: disc #1 begins with the new SBGi slow roll
progression which breaks down the roll into three parts, Pace,
Pressure, & Position. This 8 minute section provides a method
that will help teach anyone how to slow roll, and the benefits
that can result.
This is followed by a section on "safety position",
defending against armdrags when playing guard top. . .which details
exactly how to get your arm back while defending your back, and
a conversation on flow versus force.
The disc continues with a quick review of the fundamental
5 on top, with emphasis on staying attached, using your chest
and upper body to create pressure, the use of 'degrees' of pressure,
and the infamous "shoulder of justice". There is also
a section on blocking out the guard in order to force the bottom
person to give up his near side arm, as well as how to control
the far side arm without giving up top position.
A section on top game submissions begins with a
detailed explanation of the difference between frames and pushing
or pulling. And the importance of that concept in BJJ. There are
tons of details here, as well as several bread and butter subs.
This section then leads into the PRY BAR. . .this
is the first time the pry bar has ever been shown on DVD, and
it is a central piece to the top game taught in this series. The
pry bar gives you the ability to take your opponents shrimp away,
keeping them flat on their back, and open to submissions.
After the pry bar is taught a long section begins
on the ROLLING PIN KNEE RIDE.
It begins with a detailed explanation of how to
acquire knee ride without allowing your opponent to turn to their
side or escape in the process. This is followed by how to use
the previously shown pry bar in the knee ride position, how to
keep from being rolled, or bridged off, and how to put a horrible
amount of pressure on the bottom person using this unique position.
Disc #1 continues with the even more brutal 'knee
on head' position. . .followed by a great submission set up using
knee ride to take your opponents arms. The ability, or non ability,
of the person on bottom to "bite" was also discussed
and demonstrated, as is taking the back with the harness from
here. Every conceivable way your opponent can escape this position
(knee ride) is addressed, and the counter measures are all shown.
This includes re-pummeling, shutting down the underhook, and defense
when they grab your feet or legs.
The disc concludes with an interview with Matt where
the history of SBGi is discussed, the major mileposts of the Organization,
his own Gym, the worldwide community, and the future of SBGi as
a whole.
Disc #2: Clinch for Self Defense, Run Time
= 60 minutes.
This DVD picks up where DVD #1 leaves off. More
knee ride counters, and the measures to prevent them, are shown
in detail. This is followed by a brief conversation on the evolution
of moment and technique in BJJ, including a demonstration of the
"magic 8 ball" of BJJ.
This is followed by more top game subs, including
the "heart attack", arm triangles, and the concepts
behind a proper blood choke. The section concludes with a discussion
of how athletes experience 'good' days and 'bad' days on the mat,
and all the possible reasons why this may occur. . .and includes
a talk on "mental" training, it's place, and it's potential
misuse.
From here the rest of the DVD moves into clinch. . .this begins
with solid fundamental drills which include the head position
drill, handfighting, single neck tie drills, neck tie boxing,
the duck under choke, and pummeling.
This is followed by a conversation on "pre-fight
psychology" and includes the ABC's of self defense, including
the diving board analogy of mental training, and it's place within
training.
After this the 'helmet', crash, and control positions
are shown and drilled, followed by standing chokes, the standing
harness, takedowns, and the 3 ways to end a fight. The squatting
harness position is shown and drilled, and t-shirt chokes are
put into the mix.
The DVD ends with all of this being connected back
into the knee ride position as one cohesive whole.
The final scene is a Q & A section with Matt which addresses
the use and value of certain positions, as well as the over all
self defense (anti-assault) philosophy taught at SBGi.
There is an additional small interview on this DVD
which talks about the use of the "I" method, as well
as a conversation about the 'ideal' training environment.
Disc #3: BJJ Q & A, Run Time = approx.
60 minutes.
This disc begins with using the harness from quarter
top position. All the fundamentals of controlling 1/4 top are
shown and discussed in detail, including many turn overs. The
shoulder side up drill is shown and used to drill the harness
position.
This section smoothly links ALL the material worked
in all three DVD's which includes the clinch, the harness, and
knee ride.
This is followed by an open Q & A with the group.
Questions include, how to finish the head and arm guillotine from
guard, the keys to sweeping well in butterfly guard, how to catch
arms from closed guard, how to work the climbing armbar, how to
catch a pit stop off an arm drag, how to prevent the stack, and
many more. All the questions are answered in detail and material
for each is worked on the DVD.
This is followed by a conversation on what is truly
valuable in BJJ, and what is not. How the body actually leans
to do BJJ. And a very enlightening interview with SBGi's own Lily
Pagle, who is an amazing athlete and inspiration to many.
The instructional portion picks back up with a detailed
breakdown of the PIVOT SWEEP. . .and this is another move that
has yet to be shown on an DVD's up to this point. How to set it
up, load the sweep, and execute the turnover, are all shown in
detail.
This DVD concludes with a few more questions. .
.how to start matches from the knees, and why, questions and reviews
on the anti-ground and pound guard, and more.
The ending conversation concludes with a discussion
of mental training, motivation, authenticity, measurement, and
meaning.
If you enjoy SBGi products, or previous Matt Thornton
products, you will enjoy this 3 DVD set. Much of this material
has never been shown on DVD before, and like all SBGi products,
it is filled only with high percentage fundamentals. . .no fluff.
The cost of this 3 DVD set is 99.00. Or
39. per DVD. + Shipping and Handling

first series has become one of the top sellers of all time within
Martial Arts videos. An instant classic, they set off a fire storm
of controversy, and remained a central catalyst in a Martial Arts
training revolution that is still taking place all over the world!
They were voted as one of the top five self defense videos of
all time by Black Belt magazine. Martial Arts video reviews said
"If you buy only one set of videos this year, let these be
the ones. If you believe that there has been an evolutionary development
in the martial arts over the last few decades, from Bruce Lee
to the Gracies to the all-round fighters of then you will want
to see these tapes. If you have to sell your body to medical science
or your sister to an Arab oil sheik, buy these tapes!" Voted
as one of the top five videos of all time! Like the first series
this new series contains interviews, fight footage, and guest
Instructors. Matt's first series still remains a top seller and
has sold all over the world in over 30 countries. Look for this
series to be as enjoyable and entertaining to watch as the first
was, and just as revolutionary! Read what others have said about
this new series.
Disk 1: The ground - Top game
Matt teaches the fundamental five that will allow you to hold
down and control larger, stronger opponents. He focuses on the
two keys for a great top game, mobility, and the pressure
of weight. How to mount, how to keep a guy from rolling to his

change your ground game for the better!
Disk 3: The Ground - Guard game

Rodney King's Street boxing
- Power striking for NHB, and the street
In this groundbreaking three tape series Rodney King demonstrates
his world renowned stand up training skills, and walks viewers
through an entire training program designed to teach you how to
defend against bard knuckle punches, strike back with power, and
stay safe on your feet, in the street, in the ring, or in the
cage!
In
addition, Rodney's now famous "crazy monkey" striking
defense is taught. This method is light Years ahead of "regular"
boxing, or kickboxing methods. Rodney calls the standard boxing
and kickboxing methods "attribute based methods", that
is they work for strong, tough athletes. But Rodney's "crazy
monkey" method will allow virtually anyone to defend themselves
against full power, bare knuckle punches to the head and body,
and not only survive, but to come out unscathed, and firing back
with extreme power.
ALL DVDS FEATURE RODNEY IN ACTION, FIGHTING FULL CONTACT AND
TO KNOCKOUT!
DVD #1 Street boxing defense
Rodney believes that your stand up skill begins and ends with
defense first! If you cannot defend against powerful punches and
strikes then you wont have the confidence needed to fire back
with powerful punches and strikes. As such, Rodney places emphasis
on defense, and this one hour tape teaches you his entire defensive
system that anyone can use.
This tape includes: - Rodney's long range defense, - the elbow
spike, and it's proper use - the hunchback stance, designed to
give you maximum power with minimum openings, - the Crazy Monkey
defense against all punches, hooks, uppercuts, and body shots,
with and WITHOUT gloves (bare knuckle), - street boxing considerations
including the use of elbows and knees, - how to slip when your
opponent is allowed to knee or take down, - the famous 3 point
cover, or "helmet", - how to work offense and defense
on the focus mitts while keeping it completely "Alive",
- how to take a beginner into sparring without injury, or making
them "gun shy", - how to 'read' punches, and where to
always look when sparring, - the ultimate corner drill, and how
to use it to gain fantastic defensive skills, - learning to "ride
the storm", - RODNEY IN ACTION, SPARRING FULL CONTACT and
TO KNOCKOUT!
DVD #2 Power offense & kicking for NHB
Once you have the defensive methods down, you will be ready to
strike with confidence and power in your offensive game. Here
Rodney shows you exactly how to do just that in this one hour
tape. While always keeping in mind the possible context of an
NHB match, or streetfight.
This tape includes: - POWER combinations with the hands, - Rodney's
favorite 4 knockout combinations, - open hand power slaps (including
the famous rabbit punch knockout shot), - how to kick in NHB with
the rear Thai kick, - how to use the inside shin kick in NHB,
or the street, - Rodney's lead "smash" kick, and rear

Rodney King's "Street Boxing"
Review
by Dagan Stafford, Team IronLife.com Staff Writer
First let me say something about technique
and training tapes in general. I have been a skeptic of tape
and video learning in regards to mixed martial arts. It often
felt like big name guys cashing in on a gullible niche market
to me. Compared to a live class, videos offer no feedback. I
felt like you could not effectively learn from a video.
Now that I have been training for a while,
I have begun to add some titles to my library. They supplement
my class and training time. When I workout in my garage with
some sparring partners, we can check out something on a tape
and use that as a focus for our time. The feedback comes from
trying what you see on a live, resisting opponent. Videos shine
in that they have a permanence to them. You can go back and
watch something over and over, cementing the idea in your mind.
In short, I have broadened my horizons when it comes to video
series, and I have found some solid stuff to add to my own game.
This month I checked out the Rodney "Chico"
King series offered through the Straight Blast Gym. Rodney is
from South Africa and has a western boxing, Muay Thai background.
This series is great. I knew that it was working for me when
I began to get the better of my main sparring partner. He has
a longer reach and about 40 lbs on me, but I started adding
some defense and striking techniques from the series and they
worked out really well.
The series is split in to 3 DVDs, Defense,
Striking, Clinch. Its all about Crazy Monkey Defense. Rodney
teaches this hunched, hands on head style that looks weird but
works really well when you are in striking range. The striking
series has a ton of stuff in it. The big principle that I got
out of it was setting up kicks with punches. I use a jab, hook,
uppercut, overhand right, rear Thai kick combo I got from the
tape very effectively. Each strike feeds the next and if one
is defended another is right behind it. The body shots section
was very enlightening. I had ignored the midsection and focuses
on the head too much. The clinch techniques are awesome for
when an opponent is schooling you. The production is good and
there is lots of live sparring to demonstrate the techniques
along with some great training ideas. Its one that I am really
glad to have in my collection.

onto the street on video! Chris brings his vast amount of knowledge
and skill as a BJJ American black belt with the Machado brothers,

and wrestler, into this action packed six tape series. We promise
that you will never seen much of the material presented on these
tapes on video ever before!
Matt,
I just received the tapes by Chris
Haueter made by you guys. I thought (next to your tapes) that
his tapes on BJJ was the most easy to follow tapes on that subject
that I've ever seen. I've seen Gracie tapes, and various others
on BJJ, but his were not boring and easy to work with. Sometimes
it's hard for me to sit through a whole tape on ground fighting,
because with all the small incremental movements on the ground,
I lose interest when its not live and on tape. But with your
tapes, the way you guys cover so much, and you keep things going."
Thanks Joel
