Spring Training & Martial Arts Management Camp 2013!

April 13-15, 2013

This year’s Camp promises to be the best event SBG has ever put on!

The information, programs and training modules will be divided up, with sessions on Coaching, Competition, general training, as well as Business Management.

Whether you are an Academy owner, competitor, or just someone who enjoys Martial Arts as a hobby and wants to experience some of the planets best coaches in a fun, three day training environment, this camp is for YOU!

A Camp UNLIKE any other! DO NOT MISS THIS! Register NOW.

Sections will include:

• SBG’s Brand NEW Coaching University Program

This two day, six hour training course will be held in a private room, and feature the first section (level 1) of the SBG Coaching Curriculum. Graduates will receive the entry level coaching certificate, and be eligible for the expanded 20 hour level 2 course to be held later in the year.

• SBG’s Brand NEW Business Management Program

This three hour section, held in a comfortable, private classroom setting, will offer an overview of the new Business Management Program that SBG is launching. Speakers will include Steve Whittier, Travis Davison and Matt Thornton. During this section we will offer a comprehensive guide to how the entire operation of Academy management works. Whether you’re familiar with business or not, our niche is unique. Understanding how it works, from top to bottom, will dramatically change your bank account and your life. This will be a MUST see event if you are involved in the business aspects of what we do. * (note: recommended to Gym owners only, not employees of staff)

• SBG’s Brand New Submission Samurai Children’s Program!

SBG BJJ Black Belt & VP Travis Davison, a father of four and manager of one of the most successful Children’s BJJ Teams in our Organization, has gathered his years of experience teaching kids Jiu Jitsu, and put together a Children’s Martial Arts & Life Skills Program that covers every aspect an Academy owner needs to know.

  • A complete curriculum which follows the IBJJF belt system for children
  • Lesson plans for the classes
  • Minute by minute breakdowns of how the classes should be run
  • A business model which handles everything from the initial lesson, to the interview with the parents, to the sign up procedure
  • A leadership team program
  • A competition team program
  • A marketing package designed to drive traffic to your Academy
  • A massive list of sport specific games for kids BJJ
  • And a step by step Life Skills Program that will help the child succeed in all aspects of their life, both the kids and the parents will LOVE it, no longer will the your Martial Arts program be viewed as a seasonal luxury by parents!
  • PLUS much-much more.

Travis will be offering a class and overview for all Coaches that are interested in, or already involved in teaching children Martial Arts. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for kids is one of the most rewarding things you can be involved in as a Coach. Don’t miss this chance to learn firsthand from someone who has created the most extensive & successful Children’s BJJ team out there!

• SBG’s Brand NEW Striking & Kickboxing Program

SBG is known for its world class Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Program. However, having a unified, sensible striking curriculum, that works students through various levels of progressive training, without weeding them out, is something that has been missing from the organization as a whole. Don’t get us wrong, MANY SBG Coaches have had some top notch stand up programs. However, an approach & curriculum that covers all the bases, from brand new beginner, to competitive athlete, isn’t something we’ve ever offered before. NOW we have it! And we will be unveiling the first portions of it at this Camp!

• World Class BJJ training sections!

We’re planning on having no less than TWELVE SBG BJJ Black Belts on the mat for Spring Camp 2013! What does that mean to you? It means while the Coaching, Business and Children’s Martial Arts & Life Skills Programs are running there will be various coaches offering sessions for students of ALL experience levels, from first day members to brown belts with ten years in the game. Topics will include: APE Guard, Passing the Guard, Defending Submissions, Escapes from the bottom, and more Iron Coffin Top Game. All aspects of BJJ, from Self Defense to IBJJF Tournament strategy will be covered!

• The Premiere of a brand new Documentary on the SBG & Matt Thornton

For the first time ever, the new documentary that has been in the works regarding SBG and its history will PRIMIER for the whole Spring Camp group. NOBODY has seen this yet! That will be followed by a short talk with SBG Founder Matt Thornton that will give you the bigger picture regarding how we organize the training, curriculum and priorities of SBG. Plus, it will be a first time sneak peek into the talk Matt will be offering to University students in 2013. This will be a fun, and hopefully vision expanding discussion for everyone present.
These separate Programs, the SBG Coaching University Program, Business Management Program, Children’s Coaching Program, & SBG Stand Up & Kickboxing Program, will be offered as extensive three and four day training events at future dates in 2013-2014. This Camp will be the first time anyone gets a look into what we’ve been working so hard on in SBG for the last several Years; and as a special offer to existing SBG members, the entire weekend, INCLUDING ALL THE COURSES listed above, will be offered for one flat fee!
Attendees can then register for whichever sections they like prior to Camp time by contacting Travis at sbgmontana@gmail.com

  • If you’re a Coach, you’ll not want to miss the Intro to Coaching University! If you’re a gym owner, you’ll want ALL your teaching staff to attend as well.
  • If you’re a Gym OWNER, you’ll not want to miss the Business overview talk, it will forever change how you view the business side to what we do, and directly impact your financial bottom line.
  • If you’re at all involved in teaching Children’s Martial Arts, then the section Travis will be offering will be something you’ll want to be taking notes for! And if you’re an athlete or hobbyist who doesn’t run a school or teach yet, regardless of experience level, you’ll have classes running from morning until evening (while the other programs are going on in different areas) with some of the World’s top coaches, which you’ll have a blast!

Bring a notebook, bring a gi, bring gloves, and bring a mind that is ready to be blown away, because this Camp is going to ROCK!

Once again we will NOT be allowing anyone to sign up AT the door. ALL ATTENDEES MUST PRE-REGISTER!
Camp begins 6pm Friday, and runs 10am-6pm Sat & Sun

Cost for All three days & any Programs you opt into:

Pre-registered by March 15th, 2013:
SBGI Members (student or staff at any listed Academy): $342.00
Non- Members: $489.00

After March 15th, 2013:
SBGI Members: $399.00
Non-Members: $589.00

Considering the quality of information will be offering at this Camp, these prices are a steal, and the event will fill up fast (we already have a waiting list for pre-reg!) so you’ll want to sign up immediately!

Coach Travis has also secured an awesome deal at an excellent hotel for all Camp Members:

Red Lion Hotel Kalispell will be providing discounted rates for camp attendees using the Straight Blast Gym block. The rooms are 2 queens or 1 king for 84.95/night and include breakfast. The hotel is walking distance to the gym, shopping, and restaurants.

Do not wait to book airfare or hotel as prices will only rise and space is limited.

Based on the interest so far and the attendance of last year’s spring camp this may sell out.

As a bonus to those who register early the crew at SBG Montana will provide shuttle to and from the airport!

Don’t miss out on your chance to see what the future holds for SBG! See you there!

This will be unlike any previous SBGi camp!

SBGi’s 11th Annual Spring Camp 2006 Review
(by Matt Thornton)

“SBGi’s 11th Spring Camp was a blast!

Awesome -Awesome – Awesome Camp!

First off, we all missed Luis very much. He got very sick on the way to the plane.

But that said, I probably picked up more things from this Camp myself, then any other previously. Eric Jetton’s wrestling clinic was amazing… tons of little details that had an immediate impact on my game.

2006camp06_sm

Karl, as always, rocked with his clinch and BJJ sections. His brown belt was overdue, and well earned.

2006camp01_sm

Eric Hemphill showed why he is SBGi’s newest black belt with some amazing Jits techs, his game is unique, and dangerous.

2006camp07_sm

And Whittier?! He taught the flip side of the 3 zones of death defense we all work that Kav taught last spring. Fantastic fundamentals for the guy in top guard for MMA… and the side training between Steve Whittier and and Hemphill gave us a whole new MMA guard bottom game to play with. As always, simple and effective.

2006camp02_sm

Also big thanks to Rebecca for some very cool warm ups, as well as to everyone who showed up from around the world. I really appreciate the guests we had from Canada, Scotland, London, etc.

2006camp09_sm

One of the individuals present, who has not really been around the scene before wrote me this:

“I was completely blown away by the vibe and energy of all the SBG players… amazing. That is what i call authenticity.”

I couldn’t say it better myself. Thanks everyone… now I am going to sleep for a few days ; )”

SBGi – Fall
Camp 05 Review:

(by Luis Guiterrez)

fallcamp_2005

WHEN: October 28th, 29th & 30th, 2005
WHERE: Pembroke Pines, FL

(note: Pembroke Pines was “ground zero” for
Hurricane Wilma which hit the area only days before camp!)

camp_004“Huuuuuge thanks to everyone who hung in there and made it through the storm to attend! Nothing got in the way from making camp an awesome experience. We rolled for about four hours straight on Friday since we barely had light off of a small generator, no a.c. and no running water. I then taught some material on taking the back for about an hour before we headed to the beach. The matches where an amazing thing to see. So many varied games and everyone rolling with everyone and then, regardless of outcomes, sharing insights on the roll. I am sure everyone was getting all sorts of new information that day. I sure did.

Our power was restored just before Saturday’s sessions and from then on the coaches were able to get their material out just fine. Leo and John kicked things off with the Z-guard with Leo showing its basic structure and applications. From there he went to submission options and drilling. John closed the session off with a cycle of sweeps and x-guard options off the z-guard.

camp_006After lunch, Matt brought out his Guard Surfing material and I was blown away with it and how quickly it transferred over results to the participants. It was immediately a keeper for me and will now be what we use for coaching and training passes. He has to get this out on DVD asap!

Next day started with some material off of So Flo 2 and I added a few more options and details on getting the back from cross side drags. I was impressed with how quickly the material was used later on during open mat sessions. Christian G was all over the place with cross-dragging to the back and ninja mounting his training partners. 😉

camp_007After Sunday’s lunch, Karl got everyone going with his “keep it standing” session. As always, his innovations are inspiring to watch! He went right into distance and footwork then added strikes and set up everyone for his material. That material was taking the CM or shelling cover and learning to keep it through the clinch and then out of it. Suffice to say that it has to be seen but he blended in pummeling and shelling into something unique and more efficient.

Both Saturday and Sunday sessions were followed by Matt’s coaching for performance sessions which had everyone participating in small groups and working on specific aspects of the gym as a whole. These small groups then came together to share, discuss, debate and play with many ideas on training, coaching, actual techniques and styles of teaching and gym management.

camp_003Sunday night concluded with outdoor patio dining (awning got blown away by the storm) at a local Mexican restaurant where 30 SBGIers witnessed a rap off between the Icelandic Viking and So Flo’s own T3. Iceland 1 / So Flo 0. But… he used Runic Rap and this style truly took everyone by surprise. Something about, “Lo, here I stand before you blah blah blah…” but it rocked!

Runic Rap will surely be heard again at SBG gatherings. The Icelandic Viking is being managed by Karl in case anyone wants to book him for a wedding, parties, etc.

Another Sunday night dining event was John Kavanagh’s traditional and ritual MMA match. This time it was with Canada’s own unsuspecting Jeff Duarte. I can’t tell you the actual details of the bout as the concrete pillars got in the way as they tripped behind them and the table umbrella landed upon them. I think it was a draw by ref stoppage, as they both got up quite staggered.

John Kavanagh did take a loss on the all involved hoodie ninja basketball game where unbeknownst to Christian Graugart, his hoodie was chosen as the net.

camp_005I’ll let others explain the rest. My last vision of that night was of Karl attacking Matt from outside the passenger side window with some type of eagle claw adam’s apple attack of sorts that made Matt laugh at him between threats to let go.

As to Monday through today, all those who stayed on a few extra days trained throughout the day or trips to the beach. Thanks to Mike and Rebecca for working out with the boys on Monday and to Christian G. for training with Niko, helping him prepare for his MMA debut in December. Also special thanks to Jonathan for being the night life tour guide for the youngins.

All those whose flights were cancelled and couldn’t make camp were truly missed. Thank you all so much for making the attempt. I know some of you even tried booking again the day prior.” – Luis
