Justin Abbott Benefit Seminar Live Stream 1/6/18  @ 12pm PST (Click Here For The Live Feed)

This weekend SBG Portland will be attempting a major first; live streaming a seminar from the SBG HQ across the world for viewers online! The seminar will feature five SBG black belts covering some of their best material for a full five hours! This level of content is not to be missed, so if you aren’t in Portland or for whatever reason can’t attend, be sure to watch via live stream.

This event is taking place for SBG Portland coach, Justin Abbott. Justin Abbott is a pivotal part of the tribe at SBG Portland. In early November he started feeling ill. The doctor’s narrowed it down to being a liver issue, and his toxin numbers continued to get worse until he was admitted to the hospital. Justin required a full liver transplant as a result of his liver being destroyed by an auto-immune disease. His wife has been at his side day and night and both missed out on work and will be facing debt and hospital bills as Justin continues on the road to recovery.

Now is the time to be there for our dear friends in their time of need!

The live stream is free if you cannot attend the seminar. The suggested donation to attend is $100, but any donation amount are greatly appreciated. All the procedes will go to help Justin and Destiny Abbott. Please give generously to help tribe members in need, while learning from some of the best coaches SBG has to offer! You can donate here, or by scanning the QR code in the photo above.

Eryk Anders Wins 2nd UFC Fight

SBG Alabama’s Eryk Anders took his professional undefeated record into double figures in December with another impressive win in the UFC! Following his emphatic UFC debut victory, in which Eryk knocked out Keith Peterson in the first round, Anders delivered a dominant three-round unanimous decision over UFC debutant Markus Perez.

Things are only getting more exciting for SBG’s sky-rocketing MMA talent. Eryk Anders’ next fight has already been announced, and he will face none other than MMA legend and former UFC middleweight champion, Lyoto Machida! In just his third UFC fight, Anders will be headlining the card in Brazil against one of the biggest names in the history of the sport.

Best of luck to Eryk Anders, Chris Conolley, and the SBG Alabama team ahead of this exciting challenge!

Happy Birthday to Tedzilla!

Happy birthday to Ted ‘Tedzilla’ Davison! SBG VP’s son turned 18 in December, and celebrated will a killer tattoo!

Ryan Asay Earns His Black Belt!

Many congratulations to SBG Montana’s Ryan Asay for earning his much deserved BJJ black belt. The honor comes after Ryan has spent the last 11 years training alongside SBG VP and coach, Travis Davison. Ryan is the second student to receive the distinction from Travis, who himself is SBG founder Matt Thornton’s first white-to-black belt student!

Travis had this to share about the event:

Ryan Asay was one of my first students when I moved to Montana with my family 11 years ago. He was a 19 year old kid when I met him and to say he was quiet and shy would be an understatement. 9 years ago when Kisa and I were out of work and collecting unemployment we hatched a plan to start SBG Montana. I had been teaching a handful of guys Jiu Jitsu in my garage and at another person’s dojo and decided to pitch my idea to them at Moose’s Saloon. Ryan and Zach were there and opted to write checks for a year’s membership upfront. That money helped to open our first location and Ryan became a fixture on our mat. Fast forward to December 29th, 2017 when I had the honor to award him his well-deserved black belt. He is my second homegrown black belt and has been a full-time employee for over four years. I couldn’t be prouder of the man he has become of the past 11 years or happier about his success and accomplishments. He and Julia will have their own story to tell one day.
Love you buddy!”

Huge Ironman at SBG Portland!

Congratulations to all the students who took part in what must be the biggest ironman promotion in SBG Portland history! On December 13th SBG Portland promoted no fewer than 14 students in one massive event! That tally included 12 new blue belts, and two blue belts being promoted to purple. The ironman is not a belt test or exam but instead a celebration for those students who have already consistently shown the skill to be at the next level. In it, each student rolls with every other student in attendance, from white belts up to black belts, not only so that we may all celebrate together as a tribe, but to represent the impact every tribe member has on the success of the promoted students. Congratulations to Lucas, David, Kat, Joe, Andrew, Molly, Marc, Emily, Mike, Jedediah, Justin, and Abigail on their new blue belts, and Zandy and Matt on their purple belts!

Also at the same event, SBG Portland Coach and IBJJF World Masters champion Amanda Diggins was awarded the first stripe on her black belt. Congratulations Amanda!

“This woman is a champion competitor, a world class coach, and a leader. She represents the best of SBG. It was an honor and a privilege to award Amanda Diggins her stripe on her black belt tonight.” – Matt Thornton

An SBG Season of Giving

Christmas is, of course, a time of giving, and no where is that more true than at SBG. This holiday season, SBG gyms across the country collected toys for kids, and food for the hungry, in a huge effort to give a little back to the communties in which they operate.

SBG Athens collected 500 toys for Toys for Tots. The Detachment Coordinator had this to say, “Thank you again for so much community support for you and your group. You guys always knock it out of the park!”

Meanwhile, SBG Atlanta had a toy drive of their own; stuffing toys and gifts into car trunks until they could barely close to give to community families!

During the 2017 Hunger Bowl in support of the Foodbank of Northeast Georgia SBG Athens created 28,000 meals after collecting an equivalent of 41,000 pounds of food in just two weeks. They once again won the coveted Empty Bowl prize for most pounds collected per employee.
All this effort from SBG Athens came hot on the heels of presenting a check to The Cancer Foundation for $3300 for funds collected during the Choke Out Cancer pink belt drive, and the SBG Athens tribe helping to collect 38 units of blood for the American Red Cross during its annual Blood Drive!
SBG Balina raised over 3000 Euros to donate to mental illness charity ‘Mindspace’! They also hosted a seminar to raise awareness for mental illness that had over 80 attendees!

IBJJF No Gi World Champions At SBG!

December was also the month for the annual IBJJF No Gi World Championships down in California. SBG athletes from around the world came to compete, and many picked up medals on one of the highest no-gi grappling stages around!

After all was said and done, SBG celebrates four brand new IBJJF World Champions! Congratulations to Shay Montague, John Allsup and Jimmy Center, who all won gold in their blue belt brackets, and to Chris Myers on winning gold at brown belt!

Well done, as well, to Ella Prevost, Ansleigh Wilk, Liisi Vaht, John Diggins and Amanda Diggins. All four securing impressive spots on the podium in their respective brackets at the toughest levels of competition.

Cane Prevost On Triangle Escapes

It has been far too long since we were graced with a fresh blog post from SBG Portland’s Cane Prevost. The BJJ black belt’s blog is an absolute treasure trove of information and instruction, breaking key BJJ concepts down into easily digestible content. If you have never checked it out, stop everything and do so now!

Cane’s lastest piece stems from a recent instructional video that was floating around Facebook, showing a unique triangle choke escape that, straying from SBG’s focus on fundamentals, instead saw the instructor commit numerous errors in making his escape. It was enough for Cane to create a whole post about the dangers of internet instructional videos, and the negative impact the wrong ones can have on a BJJ students game, especially at an early level.

Cane works through the video in question, pointing out its critical flaws in terms of structure and posture, and compares it with a more reliable, though less flashy, video on a correct triangle choke escape. Be sure to read Cane’s post, it is just one small example of the difference between SBG’s approach to BJJ and other gyms out there.

SBG featured in FCFF’s Best of 2017

FCFF, the MMA and grappling promotion behind Rumble @ The Roseland, had a bumper year in 2017, and they celebrated in December by highlighting some of the best moments from the year. Unsurprisingly, SBG’s name was mentioned more than once in the awards. Specifically, SBG was awarded Best Crowd Following, for its efforts at the Wimp2Warrior card. Also, SBG’s Max Garrison, who scored back-to-back amateur wins in 2017, was awarded FCFF’s 2018 Fighter to Watch.

The team at Straight Blast Gym changed lives this year and the FCFF was proud to offer the slammer as the venue to end their season of Wimp 2 Warrior. They trained everyday people for the test of a lifetime, a mixed martial arts fight. At #Rumble94, the FCFF hosted four W2W bouts ranging from 145-pounds to Heavyweight. The families of these courageous individuals packed the house!

Keep you eye on this fighter: Max Garrison. Garrison debuted into the sport at Rumble @ The Roseland 94 and won his first fight via a round three rear naked choke over Micah Mitchell. We’ve got a feeling about this young fighter.

Paul Sharp’s Tips and Youtube Page

If you haven’t already, check out Paul Sharp’s latest video. It is just one of many short tips and advice pieces that SBG Illinois’s coach has shared on Youtube, and as usual, Paul is a font of knowledge when it comes to all things self defense and combat. Here, Paul discusses the idea of micro drills, short drills that can be used to sharpen skills when a gym or academy are not available. Throughout his series of videos, he discusses everything from striking, to self defense, to weapons and holster training and beyond. Check his videos out now!

Big Wins for SBG MMA Athletes

SBG MMA athletes from across the country picked up some important wins in regional competition last month. SBG East Coast’s Chris Sniger won the Cage Titans 145lb title with a first round knock out victory over Pat Gilbride, as well as earning Fight Of The Year honors for his efforts. Out in Athens, Georgia, Lawson McClure of SBG Athens won the NFC Featherweight championship belt by unanimous decision. Meanwhile, at SBG Atlanta, Austin Hagan won his first ever amateur MMA fight! Congratulations to Chris Sniger, Lawson McClure and Austin Hagan on their wins!
The whole tribe looks forward to seeing what 2018 has in store for you all!
