Ray Price & John Frankl Provide Two Day Showcase of BJJ Fundamentals

This weekend SBG Portland welcomed Ray Price and John Frankl to the gym for a two day seminar. As expected, the event was a display of top quality BJJ instruction, grounded in solid fundamentals, which left everyone in attendance more knowledgeable than when they arrived. On Saturday, Ray Price essentially showed one defensive posture, and one fundamental movement which, when properly applied, led to an almost endless number of possibilities for escapes and reversals. On Sunday, John Frankl spent time displaying the importance of the underhook, and breaking down the simplest defensive actions available in a progressively worst scenario, all centered on a few basic movements.

At the start of John Frankl’s seminar he outlined the characteristics he ensures that all his seminars have. These are characteristics which are ever present in all SBG seminars. Content at the seminars is always accessible – whether brand new white belt or experienced black belt, the information imparted at SBG seminars is always immediately implementable. Elaborate techniques from obscure positions with a low success rate are never shown, just simple, effective movements with a wide range of applications. Secondly, skills taught in seminars are always repeatable – not relying on a specific set of circumstances before becoming effective. Finally, the information is always sustainable. The content should never rely on a student’s speed, power or athletic ability, their age or their size. As such, SBG seminars are always useful to all in attendance, be they white belt or black belt, a college athlete or older BJJ practitioner.

Coach Frankl said it best, when saying that fundamentals are not what is most basic, but what is most important. This constant focus to provide, simply and effectively, the delivery systems for what is most important in BJJ, ensure that SBG, with every class and every seminar, delivers endless value to its students. Thanks to both Ray Price and John Frankl for taking the time and imparting the knowledge. SBG Portland looks forward to welcoming you both back again soon!

Ray Price and John Frankl will both be visiting other Straight Blast Gym academies in the coming months. If you have the opportunity, be sure to attend one of their seminars, both are top level BJJ practitioners, and excellent teachers. You wont be disappointed!
