Conor McGregor Becomes Undisputed UFC Featherweight Champion

SBG Ireland’s Conor McGregor must be used to breaking records by now. Having set PPV and gate records back in July when he fought Chad Mendes, it was little surprise that he smashed them again when he stepped into the cage with Aldo this past Saturday night. But aside from monetary records, McGregor now holds the record for the fastest ever finish of a UFC title fight, beating the record of 14 seconds set by Ronda Rousey earlier this year. McGregor beat Jose Aldo to win the featherweight title in a mere 13 seconds, dropping the champion with a pin-point left, forcing Herb Dean to stop a fight that had barely begun.

In the post-fight interview, McGregor gave a succinct answer as to why he was victorious:

“Precision beats power, and timing beats speed”

It is a great quote, and one that can be traced back to the very foundations of Straight Blast Gym. SBG’s approach is based on a constant focus on fundamentals. SBG is not about over-sparring, building muscle or forcing a one-size-fits-all game plan on everyone, but instead focuses on training the essential delivery systems in MMA upon which individual styles can develop. Those delivery systems are aimed at perfecting what works, with efficiency, precision and timing.
It is an approach that is consistent from teaching SBG’s white belt BJJ students through to SBG Ireland’s top MMA fighters. Keeping training routed in fundamentals, while allowing for experimentation and testing of new techniques for effectiveness, allows for athletes to all have the same strong foundation, but completely different styles. It is SBG’s grounding in the scientific method, testing what works, and perfecting those aspects, that creates a level of precision that surpasses power, and timing that bypasses the need for speed.
Congratulations to Conor McGregor on his amazing success this weekend, and to John Kavanagh and the whole SBG Ireland team for the effort they have put in. The fastest title win in UFC history is, in fact, the result of ten years of hard work and toil, testing and experimentation, team work and support, and the whole tribe could not be prouder of the impact McGregor and SBG Ireland have had on the world of MMA.
